iPhone wars
Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 10:15AM I’m back – after a week away on a training course, and of course there’s plenty been going on.
Early last week Apple announced their big news of the iPhone 3.0 software, coming ‘this Summer’ (whenever that means). There were a few announcements of changes that will be of immediate benefit to consumers – finally copy and paste is coming, MMS support and push notifications amongst other things.
More importantly though, are the expanded features for developers in the updated SDK. Giving developers more power to create better applications will benefit everyone. The greatest strength of the Smartphone is it’s ability to be more than just a phone, and provide the user with more and more applications that make the device more useful and more enjoyable over time. Apple know that the platform is important – which is why the majority of the event last week focussed on the SDK, and showcased what’s possible on their platform.
Of course, Apple’s approach still treats the iPhone as their environment, onto which they get to say what software is allowed to run (unless you jailbreak of course) – This, in the long run, could be the iPhone’s undoing. The software you run on your phone should be your choice. I appreciate Apple want to ensure that people get a quality experience when using the iPhone – but surely having other App stores would not take away from the credibility of Applications pushed through the iTunes store – it would still be the preferred choice for the majority.
Time will tell – but we’re very definitely in ‘Smartphone wars’ territory – and the battles are far from over.
